Journey to the West

Work

Journey to the West

From Chang'an to Mount Ling, a journey through eighty-one trials in search of true scriptures, wisdom, and enlightenment.

About

Journey to the West is one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature, generally attributed to Wu Cheng'en and believed to have been compiled during the Ming dynasty in the sixteenth century. The work draws upon multiple sources: the historical seventh-century pilgrimage of the monk Xuanzang to India in search of Buddhist scriptures, geographical and religious accounts of the Western Regions, as well as folk legends and Buddhist tales passed down across generations. From this historical foundation, the novel creates the legendary pilgrimage of Tang Sanzang and his disciples Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing. Departing from Chang'an during the Tang dynasty, they cross mountains, deserts, unfamiliar kingdoms, and eighty-one trials on their journey toward Mount Ling to obtain the true scriptures.
