5. Five Elements Mountain

This volume is adapted and illustrated from Chapters Six and Seven of the classical literary masterpiece "Journey to the West." It narrates how Sun Wukong, after stealing and consuming the celestial peaches and elixirs, is captured by the Supreme Lord Laozi, who casts him into the Eight Trigrams Furnace for incineration. Unexpectedly, Sun Wukong emerges from the furnace with his Fiery Eyes and Golden Gaze. Escaping from the Heavenly Palace, he causes a great uproar, clashing with the celestial soldiers and generals. In desperation, the Jade Emperor sends for aid from the Buddha. The Buddha wagers with Sun Wukong, and as Sun Wukong somersaults in the Buddha's palm, the Buddha transforms his hand into the Five Elements Mountain, trapping Sun Wukong beneath it.
